Why wintertime is perfect for a cosy, chilled staycation in the South Downs
For many of us a warm winter holiday in the sun will remain nothing more than a nice dream this year - a fanciful Christmas wish.
However, that’s not to say that we can’t all get out and enjoy the very best that Britain has to offer. In a year where we have reignited our love for the outdoors, now is the perfect time to explore the opportunities of a winter staycation, with or without sunshine.
At the Grain Store, we’re fortunate to be situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, whatever the weather and time of year. But with the winter months creeping in, here’s a few reasons why we think this makes a wonderful time for a cosy, chilled staycation in the Downs. And if you’re coming to stay, this almost reads as a suggested daily itinerary ,so we’ve done the holiday activity planning for you.
Off-season specials and discounts
Firstly - and importantly - with the exception of the Christmas holidays, winter is typically off-peak and that means seasonal specials and discounts to tempt you. As well as cheaper accommodation rates, which apply at The Grain Store, you may be able to find bargains in activities and things to do. Lewes Highstreet, lined with independent businesses and boutiques, is a great place to visit, both for unique Christmas shopping and also to enjoy the January Sales where you can get discounted pieces from local craftspeople, designers and artists.
An alternative landscape - think low lighting and long lines
We’re blessed in the UK and the South East to experience all four seasons each year, and we love the subsequent changes in the landscape and the abundant nature around us. Winter creates an entirely new view of the Downs. The low setting sun illuminates the vast and rolling hills and casts long lines in the form of shadows from trees, farm buildings and stone walls. On colder days, you may also find a light dusting of snow or that sparkly morning frost that makes everything magical. It’s a dreamy and mystical setting for exploring and reflection.
Peaceful wintery walks
Of course, a trip to the Downs is synonymous with hiking and walking. With over 100 miles of paths, there’s everything from winter woodland walks to tough uphill trails like the 277m ascent to the “summit of the Downs” known as Mount Caburn. With the main tourist season behind you, it’s likely the paths will be peaceful and you may find entire stretches to explore in solitude. But don’t worry civilisation and a warm, welcoming English country pub with a roaring fire is never far away.

Hot chocolate, hot coffee, hot baths (feeling hot, hot, hot)
What better thing to do after returning from your winter walk, than kicking off your boots and indulging in a hot, frothy drink and a soak in the tub? We can recommend hot chocolate from Jocoa in Brighton or a steaming cup of freshly roasted coffee from Trading Post Coffee Lewes, the latter you’ll find in your Grain Store welcome bag. Warm your cockles further with a relaxing bath. At The Grain Store, we have luxury bathing products from A.S. Apothecary for a perfect pampering session at home. Bliss.
Cosy up and chill out
Whether you want to lose yourself in a book, start a Netflix marathon or just curl up on the sofa, winter is when you can find your stillness. Like all mammals, an important aspect of winter is the hibernation mode we go into in order to reserve and restore our energy ready for spring. The Grain Store boasts plenty of comfy spaces to switch off. From our cosy mezzanine reading area to our huge 3x3 comfy corner sofa - capable of accommodating the whole family. And if you’re coming with someone special, then we think you will adore our ‘Love seat’ from Maker&Son.
Making space for quality time and connections
As more of your time will be spent indoors this winter, thanks to those long cosy nights, you’re really able to savour your surroundings and focus on quality time with friends and family. A holiday can be a great way to reconnect with those you love, making space for fun and games, quality conversations or simply just being together.
