The Power of Collaborative Working

Collaboration Equation™ Collaborators Day at The Grain Store Lewes

The power of collaborative working is well-documented. There are websites dedicated to body-doubling – when you work alongside someone else but on different projects. You simply log on, share your intention for that day’s work and then concentrate on the task at hand. It is the accountability that drives motivation. We are hardwired to mirror others. Seeing someone else working encourages us to do the same. But this model also offers moments of respite in which you can take stock of what you have done, what needs doing or just talk. This is one way of working collaboratively but there are hundreds of possibilities and they are evolving all the time.

At The Grain Store, we believe strongly that collaborations are key to growth. Right from the early days of the project, we sought out artists and craftspeople whose vision aligned with ours. We shared our hopes for the space as well as our strong connection towards our beautiful location, and worked seamlessly with people who understood both.

It seems apt then that The Grain Store now often sees teams brought together from across the country. In November, the Collaboration Equation gathered in our space to talk inclusive cultures and diversity of thought. The hum of conversation, broken by laughter, filled the space. So many of us work remotely now that these moments of unification are hugely valuable not least simply for a chance to get to know each other better. Doing so though in an environment, which isn’t formal or uncomfortable reaps huge benefits. We have worked hard to make sure that The Grain Store is a place that offers ease, inspiration and calmness. After all, the calmer our minds, the more productive we can be.

Teams who have come here to collaborate have combined team working at our table, which is flooded with light from The South Downs, with “breaking out” into other spaces. The teddy-chairs on the mezzanine are a perfect spot to read or quietly research, or you might stand at the kitchen island cradling a cup of coffee and having a chat.

Beyond the glass doors, though, are those hills. Some of the best ideas come when you don your wellies to walk and talk. With the cold air awakening the senses; and the rhythm of your footsteps calming the nerves, this is the time when ideas can flow. Being immersed in nature – and perhaps an environment which is new to you – gives the mind a wonderful holiday; and clears space for inspiration. Walking with colleagues is a chance to be together somewhere fresh and to gain a new, shared experienced. We have hosted regular meet ups for the Walking Partnerships team as they show others how to incorporate nature into their self-development.

There is also the potential to combine walking or sedentary meetings with some respite. The Grain Store team works with incredible local chefs and relaxation specialists to tailor experiences for our guests. An evening of superlative food cooked right in front of you in our space perhaps? Or massages in your rooms after a day of development and innovation? The Grain Store is so much more than a place to rest your head (though we do promise a beautiful night’s sleep). It is a place to relax but also a place to bond and achieve. As you look ahead into 2025 – making plans, sharing ambitions and setting goals – now is the perfect time to book a stay with your team.
