Top Sussex Beaches

Cuckmere Haven Beach

This serene, secluded pebble beach has been featured in films, photoshoots and TV adverts for years. The dramatic backdrop of the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters makes it one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, only 40 minutes away from The Grain Store by car. What’s more - it’s a great spot to enjoy the low, Autumnal sunsets which are particularly stunning at this time of year.

Eastbourne Seafront and Pier

If you’re looking for a quintessentially British day trip to the coast, Eastbourne is a great choice! With its beautiful, five-mile seafront that offers stunning views of the Seven Sisters Cliffs, the traditional Victorian pier and a three-tier promenade - you’re guaranteed a great day out.

Camber Sands

A little further afield, Camber Sands offers a stunning stretch of unspoilt sandy beach. It boasts a famously long, impressive system of sand dunes which makes for an impressive photo opportunity!

Exploring Sussex castles

Lewes Castle

A mere 14-minute drive or an hour’s walk from The Grain Store, Lewes Castle is a must-see attraction that’s great for getting the whole family learning some local history. The Norman Castle was built after the Battle of Hastings, by supporters of William the Conqueror. We recommend climbing the steps to the top of The Keep for stunning panoramic views of the Sussex countryside.

Hastings Castle

If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing coastal Sussex day trip, then definitely consider a day out to Hastings Castle; it really does have something for everyone and is just an hour’s drive away.

The Castle, built high above the historic town of Hastings offers truly spectacular views.

For the history buffs amongst you, Hastings Castle transports you back in time, to one of the most significant moments in Britain’s tumultuous past.

Hidden gems in East Sussex

Lake Wood & Grotto

This East Sussex hidden gem located just 20 minutes drive from The Grain Store makes a wonderful, watery adventure!

Not only will you want to bring your camera to capture the gloriously picturesque Autumnal view of the lake, but you’ll also want to marvel at the flora and fauna of the season, including the fairytale-like fly agaric.

If you’re lucky, you can forage for conkers and even spot a migratory fieldfare or redwing bird.

Beachy Head

This dramatic headland near to Eastbourne doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it should. The bright white chalk cliffs provide incredible views across the English Channel and you can even take a walk to the Beachy Head Lighthouse - a true hidden gem.

If you walk underneath the cliffs, slightly off the beaten path, towards the lighthouse - you may well find that this route hasn’t been discovered by most.

You may be treated to two other delightful surprises. You might find seals lounging on the rocks around the lighthouse and depending on the weather and time of year, you might be able to enjoy some spectacular stargazing.

Outdoor activities in Sussex

Drusillas Park

If you’re looking for some outdoor activities that are even more family-family, you might want to visit Drusillas Park: a small zoo, theme park and water park all rolled into one. Just a 20 minute drive from The Grain Store, you can pack in a full day of adventure before enjoying some simple luxury back at your East Sussex home away from home.

If you’re looking for some Halloween fun, Shriek Week is not to be missed - with its Haunted House, Mummies, creepy crawlies and pumpkins galore.

Coastal Walks in Sussex

Castle Hill Nature Reserve

One of the delights of The Grain Store’s location is walking up the bridleway from our main gates and directly onto the South Downs Way.

If you walk to the top of the Downs, with the sea in front of you in the distance, you can head right towards Woodingdean and very quickly you’ll arrive at Castle Hill Nature Reserve on your left. Wrap up warm, take in the Autumnal flora and fauna and enjoy a refreshing picnic with a hot flask of tea.
