Five ideas for a heart-warming winter holiday in Sussex
It seems that in the blink of an eye, the clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer and there is no denying that winter is coming.
While you may be tempted to batten down the hatches and abandon any plans for travel and adventure until spring, don’t forget that winter can be a wonderful time to holiday. Particularly for a cheeky staycation. From cheaper accommodation rates to the opportunity for solitude and a slower pace of activities, winter can offer those chilled-out holiday vibes. When we need them most.
However, if the thought of a winter holiday in the UK makes you feel cold with anticipation, then we have a few ideas to fire up the imagination. Start planning to ensure your winter break is a heart-warming affair.
Wrap up and embrace the elements
Come rain or shine, Sussex is a stunning backdrop for your holiday. So make sure to pack your parka and enjoy the great outdoors, whatever the weather. The South Downs National Park boasts over 100 miles of countryside and trails, stretching from Winchester, Hampshire through to Eastbourne, East Sussex. Plenty to explore.
Throughout the year, you will be in the hearty company of fellow hikers, cyclists and explorers who come to enjoy the vast landscapes, in all seasons and in all conditions. With several hills including the 277m Mount Caburn, you can get the heart pumping and keep the cold at bay.
If you’re feeling particularly brave or have an affiliation with the cold, head out on a crisp, clear night after sunset and enjoy the night sky. In 2016 the South Downs was awarded International Dark Sky Reserve status, making it one of the best places in England to see the stars. Just make sure to take a hot flask and a head torch.
2. Blow off some steam on a historic pub crawl
You will be sure of a warm welcome at one of Sussex’s plentiful country pubs and casual places to eat and drink. Since the 12th century, countless public houses have opened their doors, making the pub a key part of Sussex's history. And with so many contending for your business, the standard of food, drink and service is exceptionally high across the region. A la carte is the modus operandi.
As well as offering up a fine selection of regional food and locally made craft ales, wines and ciders, you will find live entertainment ranging from cèilidhs to karaoke.
One of our favourite establishments to visit after a winter walk is The Ram Inn in Firle. With all three of the public rooms featuring a roaring fire, it is the perfect place to relax, recharge and warm your cockles.
3. Warm up for a movie marathon
There’s just something so much cosier about independent arthouse cinemas. The small and intimate spacing, the often plush velvety chairs, the dimly lit bar spaces and of course, the welcoming atmosphere.
Sussex has several independent cinemas to choose from including the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, Brighton or Orion Cinema, Burgess Hill. Both bring old-school vibes for that quintessential cinema experience. With a great selection of new and classic film titles, escape to alternative worlds on a cold winter’s day.
For indoor entertainment from dusk to dawn, The Depot is a great destination. Situated in the heart of Lewes, right by the train station (handy), this is a stylish multi-purpose entertainment space. Featuring a state-of-the-art cinema, large café-restaurant, displays of local artwork, and hosting live entertainment, it is the perfect place to pass the time away.
4. Indulge yourself at a hot spa day
The winter months are a time to slow things down, relax and focus inwards. And what better way to do that than at a luxury spa?
The Spa at South Lodge in Horsham offers unique spa days where you can enjoy a range of amenities including an indoor pool, outdoor hydrotherapy pool, wild swimming pool and a thermal suite. Nearby in Hassocks, Wickwoods Spa Hotel also provides spa days including access to their award-winning restaurant. Set in 22 acres of garden and woodlands, it is a beautiful location in all seasons.
For true five-star luxury, check out the multi-award-winning Utopia Spa at Alexander House. They have a number of indulgent spa packages including a mother-to-be spa day and a unique package for those going through cancer. In the winter time enjoy their beautiful gardens from the warmth of the outdoor whirlpool or barrel sauna.
Of course, if you are staying at The Grain Store Lewes, you could always take advantage of our luxury bath or newly installed cedar hot tub. And you can even book a luxury spa treatment to enjoy without stepping out. Tara Gould of Kin Meditation and Emma Massingham of Space both offer a variety of massage and beauty treatments and will travel to The Grain Store. Bliss.
